Formation of Ions
Formation of ions : Ions are formed by the loss or gain of electrons. When an atom loss electrons, it becomes positively charged. Fro example, sodium and calcium
can lose one and two electrons respectively from their outermost shells to have an octet and become sodium ion and calcium ion respectively.

On the other hand, chlorine and oxygen can gain one and two electrons respectively in their outermost shells to have an octet, and they become negatively charged ions.

Thus, ions are electrically charged atoms. The ions positive charge are called cation or positive ions. The ions with negative charge are known as anion or negative ions.
